I've been a resident of Boston for 51 years and have never seen this city in such a deplorable state. For years the powers to be could always excuse this condition and blame it on the Big Dig, but now that the Big Dig is coming to a close (keeping my fingers crossed) who are they going to pass the blame to?
I want to know where all the additional money in the form of higher property taxes, higher fines and fees is going? It surely isn't going to help keep the city clean.
Just look at the pictures I took today at the South Station Transportation Center. This filth that is being allowed to build up on the commuter rail tracks has been like this for well over three months. It's not that they lack a broom, as you can see someone even left a broom to rot along with papers, food wrappers, cigarette butts, etc. And what gives with all these cigarette butts? It appears that no one is enforcing the no smoking policy that's posted in many areas of the platform.
To add insult to injury, the T now wants to raise the fares. All I get for the additional increase is surly employees and filth everywhere. Is anyone holding these people accountable?

it doesn't help that the citizens of Boston like to throw their trash on the streets instead of in trash cans. the people of Boston have no respect for the city they live in.
Steve, I agree.
