Did You Vote Early and Often?

This country is still the greatest country in the world but each passing year I lose more and more faith at how some people pay so little attention when it comes to the elections.

How is it that numerous dead people have been voted into offices? This year there were two; one in Florida and the other Alabama. The guy in Florida was 96 years old and still running for re-election (a twelfth term). It’s been reported that he rarely showed up for work while collecting a $150,000 salary and a $90,000 pension. How does one get a gig like that?

Other than dead people, there have been instances where animals have been voted as mayors of small towns, entire districts have failed to vote and in Tennessee a woman was elected constable because no one was on the ballot and her write in vote was the only vote cast.

The system needs to be changed, not so much to eliminate the uninformed and ones who go and vote strictly by race or straight political ties but to do away with potential voter fraud. I was never asked to show any form of ID on Tuesday even after I gave an erroneous address. I could have picked and chosen any name on that list that hadn’t voted and voted and then come back in and voted again. Why am I asked at my age,65, to show an ID when I go and buy wine, but not when I go and vote?

Maybe that’s where the saying, “Vote early and often,” comes from.

I hope and pray that a better system is in place for the next election.

It Is a small World

“If he can’t handle his own affairs, how can he run a government?”

Doest this question sound familiar? Where have you heard it before?

Maybe it was a question that came up during Herman Cain’s campaign or was it surrounding some of the stuff that came out about Newt Gingrich?

No, this time the question is being posed about Henry Tang a candidate for Hong Kong’s  top government job who has come under fire over the unauthorized  (without  a government permit)  construction  of a basement at his home.

Blame the wife

Last week, Mr. Tang tried hard to explain the unauthorized work done at his home. He said that the house was owned by his wife, not by him, and that she had done work without his knowledge.

Last October there was public speculation about an extramarital affair where he admitted to  having made a mistake in his romantic life. Gee, this sounds so familiar. 

A Small World

It seems that the climate is similar wherever you go as I read of a frustrated public who truly believe that Hong Kong’s political and economic system is ruled by a small elite out of touch with the rest of the population.. We hear similar grumblings about our elected officials on Capitol Hill.

Shades of the Occupy Movement

Last May, after Hong Kong residents staged several demonstrations to protest housing prices and what they said was an economic system run by the elite, Mr. Tang said that Hong Kong’s youth should try to emulate Li Ka-shing, Hong Kong’s wealthiest person, rather than complain about the growing gap between the rich and the middle class.
