Admitting Iraq Was A Mistake

It’s interesting to see what the loss of power after the most recent elections has done to some of the staunchest neocons. It angers me to see that these power hungry, selfish, I know better than thou, Cheney and Bush supporters, now coming out of their rat holes to admit that Iraq was probably handled wrong.

Many doubters have been fed “stay the course” and “it’s better to fight them there than to fight them here” ad nauseum. They’ve endured the chastisements from Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld, any time they questioned the reasons for going to war. They even put up with and believed Rumsfeld’s answer of “stuff happens” when he was questioned about the failure to stop the looting that took place after Saddham was toppled from power.

The doubters, who were constantly labeled as unpatriotic and for not supporting our troops, stood by and watched as Medals of Freedom were awarded to occupation chief L. Paul Bremer, Gen. Tommy R. Franks and then-CIA Director George J. Tenet. What a joke!!! These three individuals who got the highest civilian award that the President can give were responsible for the debacle that was and is Iraq. Many now say that the national security team has proved to be the most incompetent in the last fifty years. Yet we were constantly fed “Stay the course.”

I’m ashamed to say that the people of this country have lost the will to fight for what they think is right. They are too busy waiting in line for three days at the chance to buy a Play Station, or too wrapped up in watching Desperate Housewives or the latest edition of Survivor. They don’t realize that their country is slowly going down the tubes. They are so easily led astray by the pied pipers that are in charge. Many can name at least six contestants on Dancing With The Stars or American Idol but find it hard to name at least two Supreme Court Justices.

Billions of dollars have been foolishly wasted in Iraq but that doesn’t anger me as much as seeing the loss of life due to the incompetence of the current administration. I realize that we don’t have a draft any longer, but it’s a shame to have 140,000 troops bear the burden for the 300 million people in this country.

This war when it was originally declared was supposedly going to be a “cakewalk” according to some members of the Defense Department. There are approximately 3,000 of our men and women who have eaten their last piece of cake and I’m sure their loss is surely going to be felt as family members sit down for dinner this Thanksgiving day.

I pray to God that some of the newly elected political leaders can start to work together and at least start a dialogue dropping all the partisanship rhetoric and come to a solution or at least some plan other than “Stay the course” that will start the process of getting our men and women back home.
