“It won’t stop us.”
This quote at first glance might be a snip-it from the good old Post Office’s motto whereby “neither rain nor snow etc..” would not stop the mail carrier from making their appointed rounds. Or it could be a locker room quote of the Indianapolis Colt’s football team as they prepare for the Super Bowl sans a key player who will be out because of injury.
But it isn’t either. It’s a quote from the mouth of that feisty bulldog of a VP, one named Dick Cheney, responding to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s approval of a resolution opposing President Bush’s plan to send more troops to Iraq.
They don’t care if more than two-thirds of the citizens of this country are against it, they’re going to do it any way. “We are moving forward,” Mr. Cheney said in the CNN interview. “The Congress has control over the purse strings. They have the right, obviously, if they want, to cut off funding. But in terms of this effort, the president has made his decision.”
It’s like telling someone who has lung cancer to stop smoking but they object, even knowing they’re doing tremendous harm to their body, and they defiantly proceed to continue to do so. The difference in this case is that the smoker is doing harm mainly to themselves. In the Vps case he’s sitting back in his comfortable surroundings and putting thousands of others in harm’s way.
I have a suggestion for Congress. OK the funding only with the stipulation that both Dick Cheney and President Bush accompany the additional troops to Iraq and keep them there until the last soldier comes home. Maybe FOX can send Geraldo Rivera to be with them to hold their hands.
