How far can the Red Sox go when their starting shortstop Julio Lugo is hitting a paltry .196 after 68 games?
Why is it that the Red Sox since the departure of Nomar have had a hard time keeping a shortstop around for more than one year?
Here's a comparison of the starting shortstops for the Red Sox from the last four years;
Name -Year played for Sox - Current Team - Current Avg. - Current Salary
Lugo ---2007--- Red Sox--- .196------ $8,250,000
Gonzales, A--- 2006--- Reds--- .263------- 3,500,000
Renteria, E ---2005--- Braves--- .329------ 9,000,000
Cabrera, O--- 2004--- Angels--- .334------- 8,500,000
Hanley Ramirez their highly touted shortstop who was the heir apparent to Nomar is currently hitting .322 with 10 HRS for the Marlins. The only consolation is that he was traded in exchange for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell.
How much better would the Red Sox be if they retained one of the shortstops from the past three years?
