Just when you thought there was a ray of hope that some change was going to take place to save the taxpayers $100 million, a cloud in the form of lobbying by a special interest group (the police) put a damper on it all. See Globe story -

Good luck to all the policemen who get to keep these prized and costly perks (details) at everyone's expense. It's just a way for our elected officials to once again say thanks to you with our money. They prove once again that they are like jellyfish (NO SPINE).
The next time I hear someone complain about the people on welfare (something that my family has never been on), I would like to point all the other forms of welfare that residents of this state are or were on. The biggest scam that comes to mind is THE BIG DIG. How many people from politicians, various companies to all the construction workers benefited from the cash cow that's fed by people like you and me.
You want a favor, just grease some hack's hand, and you'll get it. Look at the Cashman and DiMasi relationship. Do you think everything was done on the up and up? Even a third grader could sniff out the truth. Just think, if DiMasi didn't ruffle someone feathers on the moral stand he took on getting legislation passed for casinos in the state. Someone better start digging a little deeper to see how much Foxwood's and Mohegan Sun are paying to keep casinos out this state.
The problem is that no one is held accountable. Companies and hacks (look at what was done to Finneran) bilk millions and end up getting a paltry fine while a kid stealing a pack of cigarettes does jail time.
It doesn't matter who is at the helm - it's always the same old same old. Special interest groups hire lobbyists to help their cause and sway the people that were elected to represent us to vote for what they want.
Who the hell is lobbying for the taxpayer? Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm in the minority and maybe it would be to my best interest to join the if you can't fight them join them club.
Unless we decide to cut government we will continue to be manipulated by the special interest groups. Do we need all the stiffs that are up on Beacon Hill?
Absolutely not.
