As a former Postal Service employee, I'm always amazed at the vitriol heaped upon this agency whenever it raises postage costs. A one cent increase, such as the one taking effect next Monday, creates such a stir especially in the media. But gas going from a mere $30 a barrel to what now closed at $124 causes very little concern in comparison.
Gee, I wonder how many letters the average household mails during the course of a week? If one mails ten letters the increase is a mere dime, ten cents; yet that ten cents hurts them more than the $10 to $20 dollars more that's being dished out for gasoline. I never understood where people's priorities were; they compain about a penny while pissing away a dollar in the same breath.
Outside of the military, the Postal Service has one of the largest fleets in this country and when gas goes up a penny, it costs them $8 million a day. How much has gas gone up since the last postage increase? It almost seems that it should cost at least seventy five cents to mail a letter instead of the forty two which it will cost on Monday.
Instead of being mad at all the companies that are forced to raise their prices to offset the escalating gas prices get mad at yourselves for not pushing back on your political leaders for not having the foresight to push for laws that will have us as a nation less dependent on oil. It boggles my mind how we on one hand have sent hundreds of thousands of troops to fight the SUPPOSED war on terror while on the other we continue to fund their coffers by buying their oil. Can someone answer for me why we are still doing business with our enemy?
IT'S INSANE!!!!!!!!!! But we deserve it when one of our criteria for selecting a President is based on whether he/she wears an American flag pin on their lapel.
We are good at focusing on minutia.
